BOAT GELCOAT
RESTORATION & MAINTENANCE

Bring faded, oxidised fibreglass back to life. LBM Fibreglass restores and protects boat gelcoat across Brisbane and South-East Queensland.

Overview

Your boat's gelcoat is constantly exposed to UV, salt and general wear. Over time this causes oxidation, fading, chalky surfaces and a loss of that smooth, glossy finish. While regular washing and waxing helps maintain a healthy gelcoat, once oxidation sets in below the surface, washing and polishing alone won't bring it back.

At LBM Fibreglass we specialise in gelcoat restoration for fibreglass boats across Brisbane and South-East Queensland, repairing and refinishing surfaces that have gone beyond what a wash and polish can fix.

Maintaining Your Gelcoat Between Restorations

A bit of regular care goes a long way in keeping your gelcoat looking its best and slowing down oxidation. Some simple habits worth building into your routine:

Rinse the hull with fresh water after every trip on saltwater, as salt left to dry accelerates oxidation
Wash regularly with a marine-specific soap rather than harsh detergents, which strip protective wax
Apply a quality marine wax or sealant a few times a year, since UV is the biggest factor in breaking down gelcoat over time
Store your boat under cover or in shade where possible, since direct sun exposure speeds up fading and chalking significantly
Address small chips and surface damage early, because once the gelcoat is breached, the underlying fibreglass is exposed to moisture

When It's More Than a Clean

If your boat's surface looks dull or chalky no matter how much it's washed, or feels rough and powdery when you run a hand across it, that's a sign the gelcoat itself has oxidised below the surface. At this stage, washing and waxing won't restore the finish: the oxidised layer needs to be properly cut back and the surface refinished.

This is also a good time to check for any chips, cracks or surface damage that may have developed alongside the oxidation, which are worth addressing as part of the same job.
