Your boat's gelcoat is constantly exposed to UV, salt and general wear. Over time this causes oxidation, fading, chalky surfaces and a loss of that smooth, glossy finish. If your boat's surface looks dull or chalky no matter how much it's washed, or feels rough and powdery when you run a hand across it, that's a sign the gelcoat itself has oxidised below the surface. At this stage, washing and waxing won't restore the finish: the oxidised layer needs to be properly cut back and the surface refinished.
This is also a good time to check for any chips, cracks or surface damage that may have developed alongside the oxidation, which are worth addressing as part of the same job.
